Toyota assembly plant in Klang kicks off with the new Vios
KUALA LUMPUR: UMW Toyota Motor recently launched the all-new Vios in Malaysia. And the new plant set up by the manufacturer in Kawasan Perindustrian Bukit Raja, Klang has also started its operations with Vios as the first vehicle to walk out of its production line. Built at a cost of around RM 2 billion, the plant in Klang has been set up in conjunction with the Malaysian government’s direction of new vehicle production.
Akio Takeyama, the Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor said, “This is the future of Toyota production in Malaysia. The plant is highly automated to ensure high quality vehicles are produced with better efficiency. Many local engineers and technicians were also sent to Japan to undergo production training to upgrade their skills to perform at their best at the new plant”.
The plant situated in Bukit Raja Industrial Estate in Klang, Selangor is spread across 670,000 square metres of area. A total of 50,000 vehicles/annually can be produced in the plant in its early days. The numbers are only expected to go up in the future.
The first Vios rolled out of the production line in the plant on 10 January 2019 after the unit started its operations on 2 January 2019. Reports suggest that the plant will also build vehicles like RAV4 and the new Yaris in the coming times. Energy efficient vehicle (EEV) models are said to be the major emphasis of the new plant in Klang.
It is to be noted that other vehicles like MPVs, SUVs, and most notably Hilux, Hiace, and Fortuner will be still produced at Toyota’s other plant in Shah Alam.
