UMWT confirms the soon arrival of Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid

KUALA LUMPUR: UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) a whole ago revealed its intention to locally assemble hybrid vehicles. And it is from then the Corolla Cross Hybrid has become one of the most anticipated models in the Toyota Malaysia lineup. Several rumours about the hybrid launch were heard, but the automaker never confirmed the news. However, everything is different now with UMWT confirming the hybrid's arrival via its social media channels.

UMWT has published a Corolla Cross Hybrid headlight image with an 'it's coming soon' caption on its social media handles. Thus, finally confirming the model’s arrival in the country. Toyota Malaysia is yet to share a launch date, however, with an active registration page on its website the hybrid's arrival shouldn't take long.

That's all Toyota Malaysia has shared with us, no other info, no specs, nothing. We however expect the Malaysian-spec Corolla Cross Hybrid to be the same as the Thailand model.

If that's the case then the locally available Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid will be powered by a 1.8-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder petrol powerplant coupled with an e-motor (72 hp and 163 Nm) powered by a 6.5 Ah nickel-metal hybrid battery. The total system power output stands at 122 hp which is sent to the wheels via an electronic CVT unit.

Furthermore, the upcoming Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is expected to be positioned near the range-topping model lineup. In which case, it will benefit from all the features and equipment that are currently part of the top-spec Corolla 1.8V trim. Part of the kit is a full suite of Toyota Safety Sense ADAS, a digital instrument cluster, and much more.

The Toyota Malaysia lineup includes the recently launched all-new Corolla Cross that is offered in two variants (1.8G & 1.8V) both powered by the same 1.8-litre four-cylinder mill making 139 hp and 172 Nm of peak torque. The mill is paired to a CVT gearbox that sends drive to the front wheels.

The Toyota Corolla Cross price ranges from RM 124,000 to RM 129,266. As for the upcoming hybrid version, its price is expected to dip a bit with local assembly in place.
