Meet Volvo’s new adventure EV, the EX30 Cross Country

KUALA LUMPUR: Globally revealed in June 2024, the Volvo EX30 has been gaining a lot of traction around the globe. To leverage its success, the Swedish automaker has come up with its Cross Country version, dubbed as the Volvo EX30 Cross Country. 

The latest version of the electric SUV is much more capable than the standard model and comes loaded with rugged design elements, confirming its unique identity. It is designed for people who want to explore beyond their crowded cities – come rain, come shine, or when everything is covered in snow and ice, says Volvo.

Volvo EX30 Cross Country: Key highlights

Rugged exterior design 

While the overall design language of the EV remains the same, the all-road Volvo EX30 features the following exclusive bits, making it tougher and more functional. 

• Dark-coloured front shield and boot lid
• Unique topographic artwork of the Kebnekaise mountain range on the front
• Chunky front and rear skid plates
• Wheel arch extensions 
• Special bigger wheels with optional 18-inch all-terrain tyres

The optional Experience package also includes a roof-mounted kayak holder, mudflaps, a roof-mounted tent, a stowable towbar, and other additional accessories.

Enhanced capability

Volvo has increased the ground clearance of the vehicle for better off-road capability. Adding to the upgrades is a retuned suspension setup which features a softer five-link rear unit, enabling the SUV to deal better with not only rougher and muddy terrains but also ankle-deep snow.

Notably, the EX30 Cross Country is not a hardcore off-roader, rather it is for those “who want big experiences from their small, fully electric SUV”

“We know that more and more people are seeking ways to get closer to nature,” says Jim Rowan, Volvo Cars’ CEO. “This is why with our new Cross Country Experience, we aim to create an entire ecosystem around those models, supporting our customers as they embrace adventure.”

Functional interior enhancements

The Cross Country version of the EV also benefits from some functional interior enhancements such as large storage compartments in doors, a versatile central storage tunnel with a sliding cupholder, and a removable and washable rear storage box.

Just like the standard model, the Cross Country also features a 12.3-inch Google-based head unit, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a soundbar system integrated into the dashboard, and advanced safety systems.

AWD powertrain

Powering the EX30 Cross Country is a dual motor all-wheel drive powertrain, which generates a maximum power of 428 PS and a peak torque of 543 Nm. It comes mated to a 69kWh battery pack, offering a WLTP-claimed range of up to 427 km. With the help of fast charging power, the battery can juice up from 10% to 80% in just 26 mins.

Notably, the Cross Country moniker is not new as we have earlier seen this on Volvo hatchbacks, sedans, and estates. Launched over 25 years ago, this rugged, all-weather concept is key to the brand's identity.
