2019 Nissan X-Trail: Variant comparison

The Nissan X-Trail is the Japanese carmaker’s most popular compact crossover family SUV. It premiered at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2013, and since then, the third-generation X-Trail has been soldering on. Nissan gave its star crossover a few updates along the way, especially in the form of facelifts to keep it looking fresh. In Malaysia, the 2019 X-Trail is offered in four separate trims, and all (except the hybrid) come with seven seats as standard. New Nissan X-Trail price commences at RM 133,888 for the base variant, while the full bells-and-whistles Hybrid trim will set you back by RM 159,888.

The 2019 Nissan X-Trail specs aim to offers buyers a well-built, reliable, and comfortable experience. And with the added benefit of three rows of seats, practicality, and flexibility get a big boost as well. The four variants each have their own USP and when it comes to signing on that dotted line, it’s crucial to know what you’ll be getting yourself into. So, let’s begin and tell you how each of these variants stacks up against one another.

2019 Nissan X-Trail 2.0L 2WD

The range kicks off with the RM 133,888 2.0L 2WD base variant. As the title suggests, this version of the 2019 Nissan X-Trail comes with a 2.0-litre four-popper that drives the front wheels. This naturally-aspirated, direct-injected motor churns out 142 hp at 6,000 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. Like with most modern Nissan vehicles, transmission chores are handled by an Xtronic CVT gearbox and in this case, power is only sent to the front wheels.

The X-Trail wasn’t designed to be brisk, but even so, this base avatar can hit a top speed of just over 160 kmph. Of course, acceleration is quite weak, as reaching 100 kmph takes well over 12 seconds. On a more positive note, if fuel efficiency really matters to you in a seven-seat crossover, this base X-Trail fares well. If you aren’t too aggressive with your right foot, you can get nearly 13.5 kmpl. As far as equipment is concerned, the 2019 X-Trail 2.0L 2WD comes with automatic halogen headlights with LED DRLs, 17-inch alloy wheels, front & rear fog lamps, power-folding and adjustable door mirrors, intelligent keyless-entry with push-start ignition, dual-zone climate control, a leather-clad multifunction steering wheel, ‘zero gravity’ front seats, a 5-inch digital driver’s display, and a 7-inch display-audio rig with AUX, USB, Bluetooth, and support for Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, and finally, there’s cruise control as well.

Nissan has also armed it with a volley of safety features such as ABS with EBD and brake assist, dynamic stability and traction control, active trace control, active engine braking, active ride control, active brake limited slip, hill-start assist, parking sensors with an around-view monitor, and four airbags.

2019 Nissan X-Trail 2.0L 2WD (Mid-Option)

Costing RM 145,888, this one remains mechanically identical to the base variant. But, it does add LED headlights, motion-activated tailgate, more stylish 17-inch alloy rims, leather interior upholstery, and electrically-operated front seats. Stepping up to the mid-option variant also gets you additional safety kit such as blind-spot warning, lane-departure alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and six airbags. If you can justify the handful of additional comfort features for an extra RM 12,000, then the add-on safety equipment will just be a bonus.

2019 Nissan X-Trail 2.5L 4WD

Next up is the RM 153,888 2.5L 4WD variant of the X-Trail. With its larger 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, your right foot now commands 169 horses and 233 Nm of pulling force. The Xtronic CVT stays, but you get added traction from an all-wheel-drive system. And because it has more power, top speed now climbs to 170 kmph, while the run from naught to 100 kmph takes 11.0 seconds. As can be expected with a more powerful powertrain, fuel economy for this variant drops from 13.5 kmpl to just over 12.0 kmpl. For the RM 8,000 premium, Nissan gives you faux leather surfaces on the dashboard and knee pads.

On the safety side of things, this all-wheel-drive variant of the X-Trail features forward collision warning (FCW), auto-emergency braking (AEB), auto high-beam assist, and adaptive cruise control.

2019 Nissan X-Trail 2.0L Hybrid

Coming in at RM 159,888, the 2.0L Hybrid is the most expensive variant in the whole 2019 Nissan X-Trail range. Its hybrid drivetrain consists of the same 142 hp, 2.0-litre petrol engine as in the mid-option, but is now joined by an electric motor and a 0.9 kWh battery pack. The former produces close to 40 hp and 160 Nm of torque on its own. The hybrid improves upon the X-Trail’s fuel economy - scoring over 16.0 kmpl. However, this is a strict five-seater.
