Mazda 2 Hybrid unveiled in Europe

KUALA LUMPUR: The latest member to join the electrification circle of Europe is Mazda’s new EV, the Mazda 2 Hybrid. In case you find it incredibly familiar-looking then that’s because it is the rebadged TNGA Toyota Yaris Hybrid. The EV will go on sale in Europe from spring 2022.

The all-new Mazda 2 Hybrid is the latest product of Toyota and Mazda long-standing collaboration. The EV will be an OEM model supplied by Toyota and it will be added to Mazda Europe lineup as Mazda’s own brand vehicle.

The all-new Mazda 2 Hybrid is the first model in the company’s lineup to come equipped with a self-charging full hybrid powertrain technology. The Mazda EV, like the Toyota Yaris Hybrid and the Toyota Aqua, is powered by a 1.5-litre 3-Cyl mill making a maximum power of 116 hp. The engine is coupled with Toyota’s unique motor-generator transaxle.

On the performance front, the new Mazda 2 Hybrid will complete the century sprint in just 9.7 seconds and will return a WLTC-rated mileage of up to 26.31 kmpl.

In the United Kingdom, the Mazda 2 Hybrid will go on sale alongside the recently launched 2022 Mazda 2. Thus, giving the customers two amazing choices in the ‘supermini’ segment and choosing the one best fitting their needs.

The new Mazda 2 Hybrid will join the likes of fully-electric MX-30 and other electrified models and help reduce the local CO2 emission. In the future, i.e. from 2022 to 2025, Mazda plans to offer its electrified rear-wheel-drive platform for large SUVs, like the Mazda CX-60.

It is also being said that Mazda will equip its new US-made SUVs with the Toyota Hybrid System. One model that we think might have benefited from the system is the Mazda CX-50 which is being built at a facility that Mazda and Toyota co-venture.
