Toyota GR Yaris to debut at 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon

KUALA LUMPUR: Toyota has confirmed the name for this hotter version of the Yaris as Toyota GR Yaris. This car is all set to make its debut at 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon.

Previously teased by the name GR-4 Moniker from the company itself, this car stands second in the list to carry a GR branding after Supra. The vehicle will make its official debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon, to be held between January 10-12. The announcement was followed up by teaser photos of the carmaker’s new offering to the market.

The teaser photos which tend to provide a better view at the rear-end of this vehicle, confirm it to be a three-door body style. The GR, which is a sole variant of the new Yaris features a sleeker and lower roofline, with a window opening similar to the Volkswagen Scirocco. The new Yaris flaunts fender flares, both at the front and rear along with boxy corners that lay emphasis on the extra width.

Toyota has not yet disclosed the technical details on this car but assures that the GR Yaris will incorporate all the technologies, experience and knowledge that the automaker has gathered in the years during its successful World Rally Championship (WRC) campaign.

A previous video on the car that was released, featured the car spinning all the four wheels on the dirt, from a standing start. This clears that the car will feature all-wheel drive and it remains to be seen if the newer Yaris will carry the previous model’s supercharged engine or carry a new turbocharged engine.

A prototype form of the car was supposed to be revealed at the season-closing Rally in Australia before the forced cancellation of the event.
