Despite that, the updates are far from minor. The new model sees significant improvements in design, performance, technology, and features, aimed squarely at keeping Proton’s popular B-segment SUV relevant in a market now flooded with newer, better-equipped rivals.
Since its first appearance in 2020, the X50 has consistently topped the B-segment SUV charts in Malaysia, selling over 140,000 units locally. Globally, the car—developed in partnership with Geely and also known as the Binyue (or Coolray in some markets)—has racked up over 1.2 million units sold across 51 countries.
New engine, interior, localised features
Under the hood, all variants of the new X50 now come with a 1.5-litre i-GT turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Output is rated at 181 PS and 290 Nm of torque—figures that represent a slight bump over the previous 3-cylinder setup. Proton claims a 0-100 km/h time of 7.6 seconds, about 0.3 seconds quicker than before, and a 4.7% improvement in fuel efficiency.
Arguably the biggest leap is inside the cabin. The dashboard has been completely reworked, headlined by a large 14.6-inch infotainment screen. The system now supports wireless Apple CarPlay (Android Auto is expected to follow), and comes with Bahasa Melayu voice command integration—the first of its kind globally, according to Proton.
Safety features have also been enhanced. The new X50 gets an upgraded Level 2 ADAS suite, including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, and lane centring assist. A new Rear Side Radar system is now standard across all variants.
Three variants
The new X50 is available in three variants: Executive, Premium, and Flagship. While pricing hasn’t been officially announced yet, Proton claims the value of added features across the board exceeds RM10,000.
Early bird deals: “READY TO ROAR” package
To drive early interest, Proton is rolling out a set of early booking perks under the “READY TO ROAR” package. Limited to the first 10,000 customers who book and register their vehicles before launch day, the package includes:
-
RM1,000 cash rebate
-
Special edition Touch ’n Go card
-
A mystery “GEMPAK!” deal to be unveiled at the official launch
(As always, terms and conditions apply.)
De Fam collab and roaming roadshow
In an effort to capture younger, trend-conscious buyers, Proton has teamed up with local girl group De Fam to produce a campaign anthem titled “All-New PROTON X50: Ready, Set, Roar”. The song will be featured in the SUV’s marketing campaign, social media promos, and at live events.
Proton is also kicking off a Roar of Amazement Tour nationwide starting this weekend. Visitors can view the SUV up close, participate in mini activities, and meet social media personalities. Lucky participants could walk away with exclusive merchandise or prizes.
Where to book
Malaysians interested in the updated X50 can place their bookings online at Proton.com, at participating Proton showrooms, or drop by Setia City Mall on 5–6 July during the launch weekend to get a firsthand look.
Proton will announce full pricing and variant breakdowns at the SUV’s official launch event later this month.
