Proton registers a trademark for X50 among others

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton has filed a trademark for X50. The manufacturer registered it along with other names like V50, X500, V500, V70, V700, and X700.

Proton's upcoming product is expected to be the next product out of its partnership with Geely. The new car is said to be based on Geely Binyue, which is already present in the Chinese market. Prior to this, the X70 was launched by Proton which is based on the Geely Boyue. The Boyue takes a slot above the Binyue in Geely’s line-up. So, it could be expected that the upcoming Proton car has the same alphanumeric naming convention like the X70.

In China, the Geely Binyue is equipped with a turbocharged, direct-injection three-cylinder petrol mill, which is available in two options. First, is a 1.5-litre engine that provides 174 hp of power and 255 Nm of peak torque. It is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Another option is a 1.0-litre unit, which belts out 134 hp of power along with 205 Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

Also, the Binyue comes with a host of additional features and new technologies. It has the Level 2 autonomous driving, which consists of GKUI system, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, autonomous emergency braking, etc. Inside the cabin, there is a 10.25-inch main display accompanied by a seven-inch LCD instrument panel. The car comes with a price range of 78,800 yuan (RM 47,858) to 118,800 yuan (RM 71,151).

This is not the first time that a car company has registered a trademark. However, it’s unclear whether the name would be used or not, as there are a lot of examples where the carmakers have registered a name and the upcoming models carried a different title altogether. As an example, ahead of the D38L SUV debut, Perodua registered three names but settled for Aruz.
