Drivetrain, range and charging
The new EV will be offered in the iX3 50 xDrive variant initially, with more variants launching at a later date. The iX3 50 xDrive is powered by a dual electric motor AWD setup, delivering a combined output of 469 hp and 645 Nm, and 0-100 kmph acceleration time of 4.9 seconds.
Built on an 800V architecture, the powertrain houses a 108.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which offers a cruising range of up to 805 km (on the WLTP cycle). Speaking of the charging time, the EV supports up to 22 kW AC charging and 400 kW DC charging; the former takes 5 hours and 45 minutes for a full charge, while the latter completes 10-80% of the job in just 21 minutes.
BMW claims that the upgraded EV runs on the new “Super-Brains,” which is a set of four control units combined into one powerful computer, offering 20 times more processing power than current BMW cars.
Exterior
The second-gen iX3 also debuts the brand's Neue Klasse design language, featuring vertically oriented kidney grilles that replace the older, horizontally styled units for a more futuristic look. The grilles are edged by slim headlights incorporating a new light signature.
The upgraded model gets 20-inch alloy wheels as a standard fitment; however, the automaker offers 20-22-inch new light alloy wheels as an optional upgrade. Adding to the EV’s bolder appearance are clean surfaces, flush-fitting door handles, and squared-off body coloured wheel arches.
The rear profile also looks fresh thanks to the new wide and vertically aligned angular tail lights, a sporty rear spoiler, and a refreshed bumper.
Interior
Just like the exterior, the cabin also exudes a futuristic vibe with a new 17.9-inch touchscreen powered by BMW’s new Operating System X and a huge Panoramic Vision head-up that stretches across the width of the windscreen and projects essential driving information, such as real-time battery state of charge, drive mode, and outside temperature.
The 5-seater EV has a clean and airy cabin with physical buttons available for key functions like indicators, wipers, volume; however, most features can be controlled via voice control or the all-new unique steering wheel. The latter looks like a floating unit connected by spokes at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions.
Other features include a panoramic glass roof, sustainable fabrics or leather upholstery, and special fitments such as sport seats and an M steering wheel for M Sport trims. The cargo volume is measured at 520 litres and can be expanded up to 1,750 litres.
Upon introducing the latest EV, Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW AG Oliver Zipse said, “The Neue Klasse is our biggest future-focused project and marks a huge leap forward in terms of technologies, driving experience, and design. Practically everything about it is new, yet it is also more BMW than ever. Our entire product range will benefit from the innovations of the Neue Klasse – regardless of the drive technology.”
All the latest technologies of the new Neue Klasse platform will be featured in the upcoming 40 BMW models set to arrive by 2027.
