How safe is the new MG S5 EV? Here’s what the Euro NCAP rating says

KUALA LUMPUR: There has been an influx of Chinese EVs in Malaysia over the past couple of years, featuring impressive designs and innovative technology. One of the latest ones is the MG S5, and today, we are going to discuss its safety score.

MG S5 Euro NCAP rating

The MG S5 received a five-star safety rating from the Euro NCAP agency, which evaluates how well cars protect occupants and road users in crash scenarios. The EV performed well in the crash tests and grabbed the following scores across the different categories -

Notably, the new MG EV scored an impressive 90% in the Adult Occupant Protection category, reflecting its strong performance in frontal and side impact scenarios. When it comes to young passengers, the S5 does not disappoint, as it achieved 82% in the Child Occupant Protection category, indicating a high level of safety when the vehicle’s integrated restraint systems are used properly.

Euro NCAP Programme Director, Aled Williams, commented: “Congratulations to MG for a well-deserved five-star rating for the MGS5 EV.  Euro NCAP continues to push manufacturers to strive for the highest levels of safety, and it is rewarding that MG have responded so positively, with excellent performance across all areas of occupant and partner protection.”

MG S5 safety and ADAS systems

Packed with seven airbags, the MG S5 EV is supported by MG Pilot, bringing on board a comprehensive range of advanced driver assistance systems. It covers key areas like -

• Collision Avoidance
• Lane Safety
• Cruise Control features
• Driving Assistance features, including active emergency braking and blind spot detection

In addition to these advanced, safety-focused technologies, safety is enhanced by Continental tyres offering outstanding braking performance. Continental’s integrated braking booster system for EVs is utilised along with large brake discs (321 mm front, 300 mm rear), delivering impressive braking distances. From 100 kmph, the vehicle can come to a standstill in 35.5 metres.

MG S5 in Malaysia

MG Motor Malaysia offers the S5 EV in three variants - Com, Com Long Range, and Lux Long Range, priced between RM 115,900 and RM 135,900. All are powered by the same rear-wheel drive electric motor generating a maximum power of 170 PS and a peak torque of 250 Nm. 

The entry-level Com comes equipped with a 49 kWh LFP battery, offering a WLTP-claimed range of 340 km, while the Long Range variants have a larger 62 kWh LFP unit with a cruising range of 430 km.

The Malaysia-spec MG S5 is loaded with creature comforts, including a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10.25-inch driver’s digital display, single-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable seats, ​​a wireless phone charger, and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

Designed for worry-free ownership, the EV comes with a 7-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty, an 8-year/180,000 km high-voltage battery warranty, and an 8-year/160,000 km warranty for the drive motor and motor control unit.
