KUALA LUMPUR: Deliveries for the all-new Proton X50 are now in full swing, with the national carmaker handing over 999 units to customers nationwide within just five working days of the SUV’s official launch on July 24.

  • What are the key upgrades in the 2025 Proton X50?

The new X50 features a 1.5L i-GT turbo engine with 181 PS, a 14.6-inch infotainment screen, Bahasa Melayu voice recognition, and upgraded Level 2 ADAS.
  • The momentum shows no signs of slowing—by the end of July, Proton confirmed that 2,000 units had already rolled off the production line in Tanjong Malim.

Proton Edar Deputy CEO Zhang Qiang credited the strong early response to a mix of marketing efforts and product readiness. “We received tremendous support from potential car buyers who were impressed by the features offered, and as a result, we garnered 5,000 bookings in just 10 days before the price was revealed,” he said. “As of 31 July, 2,000 units have now rolled off the production line in PROTON Tanjong Malim, and we have planned to keep production levels high to ensure the waiting time for customers is kept to a minimum.”

According to Proton, bookings have hit the 8,000 mark as of end-July.

The company had already been on a high with the previous-generation X50, which racked up over 140,000 units sold since its 2020 debut. The new one carries that momentum forward, with updated styling, more tech, and a focus on appealing to a younger crowd.

That shift in strategy is clear not just in the car itself, but in the way Proton’s been promoting it. From music collaborations with local pop trio De Fam to launching the car at a pickleball venue, the brand is clearly trying to break the mold.

Proton also sponsored the Anugerah Melodi Terhangat (AMT), a local awards show where the winner of the Anugerah Pilihan Proton X50 Superstar will walk away with a brand-new X50. The final just took place last Sunday, August 3, at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

“PROTON’s approach for the new X50 was to reach out to a younger customer segment and to do so, our activation events were designed to appeal to them,” Zhang added.

As for the car itself, the new X50 gets a number of meaningful upgrades. Most notably, it now comes with Bahasa Melayu voice recognition—a segment-first feature—alongside Level 2 ADAS, a revamped IHU system with a massive 14.6-inch display, and a new 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine dubbed the i-GT 1.5 TD.

Paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, the new powertrain produces 181 PS and 290 Nm, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.6 seconds. Proton also claims a 4.7% bump in fuel efficiency over the previous model.

Three variants are on sale: Executive (RM89,800), Premium (RM101,800), and Flagship (RM113,300), all prices on-the-road without insurance. The first 10,000 buyers will enjoy a RM4,000 cash rebate as part of a limited-time “Gempak! Deal.”

In a market packed with B-segment SUVs, Proton seems to be making all the right moves to ensure its updated X50 stays relevant—and desirable.
