Weekly wrap-up: Jetour T2, 2026 Proton X90 launched, Ferrari Amalfi debuts, MGS5 CKD bookings open and more

This week was quite an exciting time for local car enthusiasts as the all-new Proton X90 hit the roads in a new avatar, followed by the arrival of the highly anticipated Jetour T2 SUV. Adding to the buzz was the preview of the Ferrari Amalfi and the locally-assembled MGS5 CKD, which rolled off the assembly line at the EPMB facility. In the meantime, a couple of big unveilings and announcements remain in the headlines in the global market.

Malaysia automotive market: Key updates

2026 Proton X90 launched in Malaysia with a revised lineup

Proton has introduced the all-new X90 SUV with a revised variant lineup and a new, lower pricing strategy. The upgraded SUV is offered in three variants - Lite, Prime, and Prime X, priced between RM 106,800 and RM 122,800, making it considerably cheaper than the outgoing model. Proton has removed some of the technology and premium features to make the 7-seater SUV more accessible for Malaysian families. Instead of a mild hybrid system, the X90 now comes powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 181 PS and 290 Nm. The special launch package offers a rebate of RM 7,000 along with additional ownership benefits to the first 2,000 customers. 

Jetour T2 rugged SUV launched in Malaysia

Previewed at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025, the Jetour T2 has finally made its way to the local shores. The latest rugged SUV is offered in a single variant priced at RM 156,800 (on the road, without insurance). Powering the Jetour T2 is a 2.0-litre turbocharged AWD engine producing a maximum power of 245 hp and a peak torque of 375 Nm. With light-to-mid off-road capabilities, the SUV comes equipped with 8 terrain drive modes, a 540-degree panoramic camera system, off-road crawling mode, hill descent control, high ground clearance, and a water wading depth of up to 700 mm. The Jetour T2  early bird package, available for the first 3,000 buyers, offers a cash rebate of RM 2,000.

Ferrari Amalfi sports car debuts in Malaysia

The all-new Ferrari Amalfi has made its official debut in Malaysia and the ASEAN region. Set to replace the Roma, the Amalfi is a front mid-engined V8 2+ coupe that represents the brand’s latest interpretation of a contemporary grand touring sports car. Imported by Ital Auto Malaysia, the latest Ferrari model costs EUR 240,000 (RM 1.1 million), before duties, taxes and options. It is powered by a 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that kicks out a maximum power of 640 PS at 7,500 rpm and a peak torque of 760 Nm from 3,000 to 5,750 rpm.

MGS5 EV local assembly begins in Malaysia; bookings open

The first-ever locally assembled MGS5 EV rolled off the assembly line at EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) facility in Melaka this week. SAIC Motor has started accepting bookings for the CKD version that features some notable enhancements over the CBU model. With higher output numbers, the EV now cruises up to 446 km on a single charge, which is slightly higher than before. The MGS5 CKD expected price tag reads RM 120,000, making it RM 8,000 cheaper than the fully-imported EV; the early bird promo offers a RM 7,000 rebate, a free 7kW wallbox charger and charging credits.

TQ Wuling Bingo EV deliveries begin in Malaysia

TQ Wuling has finally begun the deliveries of the locally assembled Bingo EV in Malaysia. Launched in December 2025, the Bingo EV is offered in two variants - PRO and MAX, priced at RM 67,800 and RM 72,800, respectively. Both variants of the compact EV run on a front-mounted electric motor delivering 68 hp of maximum power and 150 Nm of peak torque. Two available LFP battery options are - a 31.9 kWh and 37.9 kWh, offering a driving range of 333 km and 410 km, respectively. The EV comes packed with advanced driver-assistance systems as standard. 

Proton announces the special Raya promo for the e.MAS 5

PRO-NET has rolled out a special Raya promo for the e.MAS 5 EV that continues to be Malaysia’s best-selling electric vehicle for two consecutive months in 2026. The festive campaign offers a RM 500 Raya rebate on all bookings made between October 31, 2025 and March 23, 2026, with vehicle registration by 30 September 2026. The automaker has sold over 5,000 units of the EV as of February 2026. 

UMW Toyota reveals Feb 2026 sales report

UMW Toyota sold a total of 4,856 units in February 2026, bringing the year-to-date total to 9,556 units. The early-year momentum is attributed to the expansion of the hybrid lineup across key segments. These include - Vios Hybrid in the B-segment sedan category, the Corolla Cross HEV GR Sport in the C-segment SUV category, the Harrier HEV in the D-segment SUV and the Vellfire HEV in the luxury MPV category. The company also opened a new Prima Pearl 4S Centre in Bayan Lepas, Penang, in February, featuring a spacious display area, two delivery bays, 10 general service bays and 10 Body & Paint bays.

Leapmotor announces OTA software upgrade for B10 EV

Locally introduced in December 2025, the Leapmotor B10 EV has received its first over-the-air (OTA) software upgrade, aimed at offering enhanced driving comfort, connectivity and safety to customers. The OTA software upgrade includes One-Pedal driving feature, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity options (wired or wireless), and smarter interface experiences. With the upgrade currently being rolled out, the existing EV owners will receive an in-vehicle notification when the update becomes available, and they can install it directly through the car’s interface.

Chery’s new sub-brand LEPAS is set to enter the Malaysian market this year. After setting up its social media handles and announcing its big plans for the local market, the brand has now released a Raya music video, “Kampung Kita”, hinting at its imminent arrival. The automaker collaborated with ASTRO and talented vocal powerhouse Wani Kayrie for the video that presents the colourful aesthetic of Raya preparations alongside the sleek and elegant presence of LEPAS, indicating what Malaysians can expect from the upcoming SUV segment contender.

Aveta Viper 180 and Bellagio 125 launched in Malaysia

Aveta Malaysia has expanded its scooter lineup with the launch of two new striking scooters - Viper 180 and Bellagio 125

  • Aveta Viper 180: It is a sporty and technology-focused scooter that combines dynamic performance with modern technology. Priced at RM 8,998, it comes equipped with a 174-cc liquid-cooled SOHC single-cylinder engine, generating a maximum power of 18 hp and a peak torque of 17.2 Nm.
  • Aveta Bellagio 125: it is a stylish urban scooter with retro-inspired aesthetic, modern practicality and efficient performance. Priced at RM 6,998, it comes powered by a 124-cc single-cylinder SOHC air-cooled engine tuned to deliver 8.7 hp and 9.5 Nm.

Mercedes-Benz VLE EV made its global debut

Mercedes-Benz has introduced the all-new VLE electric van in the global market. Touted as the redefined ‘Grand Limousine,’ the luxury EV combines the driving comfort and handling of a limousine and the spaciousness and flexibility of an MPV. Based on the automaker’s new Van Architecture, the VLE features a completely new design with an impressive drag coefficient of  0.25. With a highly flexible seating capacity of up to eight passengers, the EV will be offered in two variants - VLE 300 and VLE 400, delivering up to 415 horsepower, 0-100 kmph acceleration time of 6.5 seconds, and a WLTP-claimed driving range of 700 km. Other key highlights include - MBUX Superscreen, 31.3-inch panoramic rear screen, AIRMATIC air suspension, top-notch digital intelligence, and MB.DRIVE system.

MG4X electric SUV revealed in China

MG has pulled the wraps off the all-new MG4X in China, which is a B-segment SUV hailing from the MG4 family. Ahead of the official debut, the automaker has released the official images and preliminary specifications for the EV. It underpins the brand’s ‘Modular Scalable Platform’ and features the semi-solid-state battery tech, touted as the next big thing for EVs; it uses both solid and liquid electrolytes to offer higher energy density, longer ranges and faster charging speeds. The MG4X is expected to get a 53.95 kWh semi-solid manganese-based lithium-ion unit, offering a CLTC-rated driving range of 510 km. 

Renault Bridger Concept breaks cover

Renault has introduced the all-new Bridger Concept, previewing the brand’s upcoming compact SUV slated to launch in India next year. Positioned between the Kiger and Duster, the concept vehicle boasts a rugged and muscular appearance with squared body lines and 200 mm ground clearance. The vehicle is expected to underpin the Renault Group Modular Platform, offering multiple drivetrain options, including petrol, hybrid, and pure electric. 

Volkswagen ID.3 gains significant updates and a new name

Introduced in 2020, the Volkswagen ID.3 has received a substantial upgrade in a bid to put the poor quality and sluggish tech complaints to bed. Rebranded as the ID.3 Neo, the EV gets a new Innovision infotainment system and a new software platform supporting new features like one-pedal driving and Travel Assist. Also part of the upgrade is revised exterior styling, vehicle-to-load functionality, digital key function, and more. The upgraded Volkswagen ID.3 is expected to launch to hit the roads later this year as part of the automaker’s broader EV range overhaul.
